What are meaning-distinguishing prepositions with adjectives?

Many German adjectives are used with a specific preposition.

For example:

stolz auf + accusative - proud of

zufrieden mit + dative - satisfied with

abhängig von + dative - dependent on

With some adjectives, however, more than one preposition is possible. The choice of preposition depends on which meaning or relationship you want to express.

This means that the prepositions are not simply interchangeable. Changing the preposition can change the perspective or meaning of the expression.

Example

bekannt für + accusative

Die Region ist für ihre ausgezeichneten Weine bekannt.

The region is known for its excellent wines.

Here, für introduces the thing or quality that makes the region well known.

bekannt bei + dative

Die Region ist bei internationalen Touristen bekannt.

The region is well known among international tourists.

Here, bei introduces the person or group among whom something is known.

The adjective remains the same, but the preposition changes the relationship expressed in the sentence.

1. bekannt für + accusative / bekannt bei + dative

bekannt für + accusative describes what someone or something is known for.

Die Universität ist für ihre Forschung bekannt.

The university is known for its research.

The research is the characteristic for which the university is known.

bekannt bei + dative describes the people or group among whom someone or something is known.

Die Universität ist bei internationalen Studierenden bekannt.

The university is well known among international students.

The focus is now on the group that knows the university.

Remember:

bekannt für = known for what?

bekannt bei = known among whom?

2. beliebt bei + dative / beliebt als + nominative

beliebt bei + dative describes the people or group who like someone or something.

Das neue Lernprogramm ist bei den Studierenden sehr beliebt.

The new learning program is very popular with the students.

beliebt als + nominative describes the role or function in which someone or something is popular.

Die Stadt ist als Reiseziel besonders beliebt.

The city is particularly popular as a travel destination.

In the first sentence, the focus is on who likes something. In the second sentence, the focus is on the role or function in which something is popular.

Remember:

beliebt bei = popular with whom?

beliebt als = popular as what?

3. enttäuscht von + dative / enttäuscht über + accusative

enttäuscht von + dative commonly refers to a person, thing, performance, or experience that did not meet expectations.

Der Kunde war von dem Service enttäuscht.

The customer was disappointed with the service.

enttäuscht über + accusative commonly refers to a situation, event, decision, behaviour, or fact that causes disappointment.

Die Mitarbeiter waren über die kurzfristige Entscheidung enttäuscht.

The employees were disappointed about the last-minute decision.

The distinction is not always absolute, and there are contexts in which both prepositions are possible. However, the choice often changes the perspective of the sentence.

Remember:

enttäuscht von = disappointed with/by someone or something

enttäuscht über = disappointed about a situation, event, or fact

4. böse auf + accusative / böse über + accusative

böse auf + accusative usually refers to the person towards whom anger is directed.

Sie ist auf ihren Kollegen böse.

She is angry with her colleague.

böse über + accusative describes the reason or situation that causes the anger.

Sie ist über seinen Kommentar böse.

She is angry about his comment.

Remember:

böse auf = angry with whom?

böse über = angry about what?

5. froh über + accusative / froh um + accusative

froh über + accusative expresses happiness or relief about an event, result, piece of news, or situation.

Wir sind über die guten Ergebnisse froh.

We are happy about the good results.

froh um + accusative means that someone appreciates having a person or thing because it is useful, valuable, or helpful.

Wir sind um jede zusätzliche Unterstützung froh.

We are grateful for any additional support.

The distinction can be understood as:

froh über etwas → something makes you happy

froh um etwas → you are glad to have something

6. interessiert an + dative / interessant für + accusative

These two constructions use related adjectives but express the relationship from opposite perspectives.

interessiert an + dative describes the person or group who has an interest in something.

Viele Unternehmen sind an der neuen Technologie interessiert.

Many companies are interested in the new technology.

interessant für + accusative describes something that is of interest to a particular person or group.

Die neue Technologie ist für viele Unternehmen interessant.

The new technology is interesting to many companies.

Compare:

jemand ist interessiert an etwas

someone is interested in something

etwas ist interessant für jemanden

something is interesting to someone

Why is this important at B2 level?

At B2 level, it is not always enough to know the meaning of an adjective. You also need to know which preposition is appropriate for the meaning you want to express.

Compare:

Die Firma ist für ihre innovativen Produkte bekannt.

The company is known for its innovative products.

Die Firma ist bei jungen Kunden bekannt.

The company is well known among young customers.

Or:

Sie ist auf ihren Chef böse.

She is angry with her boss.

Sie ist über die Entscheidung ihres Chefs böse.

She is angry about her boss's decision.

The adjective may remain the same, but the preposition tells us how the adjective relates to the following noun or pronoun.

The preposition also determines the case

When learning adjective-preposition combinations, you also need to learn the grammatical case required by the preposition.

For example:

bekannt für + accusative

bekannt bei + dative

enttäuscht von + dative

enttäuscht über + accusative

böse auf + accusative

interessiert an + dative

interessant für + accusative

For this reason, it is useful to learn the complete pattern rather than learning only the adjective and preposition.

Instead of learning:

enttäuscht von

learn:

enttäuscht von + dative

Common mistakes

❌ Treating the prepositions as interchangeable

Different prepositions can create different meanings or perspectives.

bekannt für etwasbekannt bei jemandem

The first tells us what something is known for. The second tells us among whom it is known.

❌ Translating directly from English

English often uses the same preposition or expression where German distinguishes between several constructions.

For example, English "disappointed with/about" does not always map directly onto German usage. It is better to learn the German construction together with its typical meaning and context.

❌ Forgetting the case

Knowing the correct preposition is only part of the structure. You also need the correct case.

von + dative: von dem Ergebnis

über + accusative: über das Ergebnis

bei + dative: bei den Studierenden

für + accusative: für die Studierenden

Summary

Some German adjectives can occur with different prepositions. The preposition is important because it can change the relationship or perspective expressed by the adjective.

Important patterns include:

bekannt für + accusative → what something is known for

bekannt bei + dative → among whom something is known

beliebt bei + dative → with whom something is popular

beliebt als + nominative → in what role something is popular

enttäuscht von + dative → disappointed with/by someone or something

enttäuscht über + accusative → disappointed about an event or situation

böse auf + accusative → angry with someone

böse über + accusative → angry about something

froh über + accusative → happy about something

froh um + accusative → glad to have something

interessiert an + dative → interested in something

interessant für + accusative → interesting to someone

The most effective approach is to learn these constructions as complete units:

adjective + preposition + case + meaning

This makes it easier to choose the correct structure when speaking and writing German at B2 level.

Learn through listening and repetition

To develop a more intuitive understanding of meaning-distinguishing prepositions with adjectives, listen to the lesson and repeat the sentences aloud several times.

Instead of trying to choose the correct preposition by consciously recalling a rule while speaking, repeated exposure can help you become familiar with patterns such as bekannt für, bekannt bei, enttäuscht von, enttäuscht über, böse auf, böse über, froh über, and froh um.

With repeated listening, shadowing, and active practice, these combinations can become easier to recognize and retrieve together with their typical meanings and grammatical cases.

Listen and repeat the whole Adjektiv-Präposition-Verbindung, including the correct case. The goal is to learn bekannt für + Akkusativ, not simply bekannt + für, and interessiert an + Dativ, not simply interessiert + an.
