DE-B2-0022: Unreal Comparisons: "As If" & "As Though" (als ob / als wenn)

At the B2 level, als ob and als wenn are used to describe something that appears to be true but is actually not true or is doubtful.

In English, they usually mean:

• as if
• as though

The speaker is expressing an unreal impression, assumption, or appearance, not a fact.

Basic Structure

Main clause + als ob / als wenn + Konjunktiv II

Er tut so, als ob er alles wüsste.

He acts as if he knew everything.

The subordinate clause always sends the finite verb to the end, like every normal German subordinate clause.

Meaning

These clauses answer the question: What does it seem like?

The speaker does not claim the statement is true.

Compare:

Reality:

Er weiß alles.

He knows everything.

(This is presented as a fact.)

Appearance:

Er tut so, als ob er alles wüsste.

→ He behaves as if he knew everything.

(He probably doesn't.)

Why Konjunktiv II?

Because the situation is considered

• unreal
• imaginary
• doubtful
• only an impression

Therefore German normally uses Konjunktiv II.

Use:

Exactly like every subordinate clause.

als ob

More common in standard written German.

The meaning is identical.

Difference from 'wie wenn'

Southern German and Austrian speakers sometimes say:

als wie wenn or wie wenn

These are regional and generally not recommended for B2 exams such as Goethe or telc.

Common Mistakes

1. Indicative instead of Konjunktiv II

Incorrect:

B2 Tip

Native speakers often shorten als ob expressions in informal speech by omitting the conjunction and placing the verb first:

• Er sieht aus, als wäre er krank.
• Sie tut so, als hätte sie nichts gehört.
• Es klingt, als würde es bald regnen.

This shortened structure is very common in both spoken and written German and sounds especially natural at the B2/C1 level.
