At the B2 level, you are expected to use the Vorgangspassiv (process passive) confidently in all major tenses, not just the present.
The process passive focuses on the action or process itself, rather than on who performs it.
What is the Vorgangspassiv?
The process passive describes something that is happening, happened, or will happen.
The person doing the action is either:
- unknown
- unimportant
- obvious from context
Instead of saying:
Jemand repariert das Auto.
Someone repairs the car.
you say:
Das Auto wird repariert.
The car is being repaired.
The focus is now on the repair, not on the mechanic.
Formation
The formula is always:
werden + Partizip II
Examples:

Das Haus wird gebaut.
The house is being built.
Der Bericht wird geschrieben.
The report is being written.
Viele Autos werden verkauft.
Many cars are being sold.
Präteritum
wurde + Partizip II
Used mainly in written German.
Examples:
Das Haus wurde gebaut.
The house was built.
Der Vertrag wurde unterschrieben.
The contract was signed.
Die Straße wurde gesperrt.
The road was closed.
Perfekt
ist + Partizip II + worden
Notice:
worden (not geworden!)
Examples:
Das Haus ist gebaut worden.
The house has been built.
Der Brief ist verschickt worden.
The letter has been sent.
Die Rechnung ist bezahlt worden.
The invoice has been paid.
Plusquamperfekt
war + Partizip II + worden
Examples:

Futur I

Futur II

Used for assumptions or completed future actions.

Important difference: worden vs geworden
This is one of the most common B2 mistakes.
Passive
Das Auto ist repariert worden.
✅ The car has been repaired.
Becoming
Er ist Arzt geworden.
✅ He became a doctor.
Remember:
- worden → passive
- geworden → become
Passive with modal verbs
The passive can also be combined with modal verbs.
Examples:
Das Problem muss gelöst werden.
The problem must be solved.
Die Rechnung kann online bezahlt werden.
The invoice can be paid online.
Die Tür darf nicht geöffnet werden.
The door must not be opened.
When do Germans prefer the passive?
German uses the passive very frequently in:
- academic writing
- scientific texts
- newspapers
- official announcements
- manuals
- business communication
Examples:
Die Ergebnisse werden analysiert.
The results are being analyzed.
Das Produkt wurde entwickelt.
The product was developed.
Die Daten werden verarbeitet.
The data are being processed.
Active vs Passive

Typical B2 mistakes
❌ Das Haus ist gebaut geworden.
✅ Das Haus ist gebaut worden.
In the passive perfect tense, German uses worden, not geworden.
geworden means “became”:
Er ist Arzt geworden.
He became a doctor.
But in passive grammar, geworden loses ge- and becomes worden:
Das Haus ist gebaut worden.
The house has been built.
----------------------------------------------
❌ Das Auto wird repariert geworden.
✅ Das Auto ist repariert worden.
This sentence mixes two different tense structures incorrectly:
wird repariert = present passive
The car is being repaired.
ist repariert worden = perfect passive
The car has been repaired.
You cannot say wird … geworden for this meaning.
Correct options:
Das Auto wird repariert.
The car is being repaired.
Das Auto ist repariert worden.
The car has been repaired.

❌ Das Essen wurde gekocht werden.
✅ Das Essen wurde gekocht.
wurde + Partizip II is already the complete Präteritum passive form.
So you only need:
Das Essen wurde gekocht.
The food was cooked.
Adding werden at the end is incorrect here.
Use werden at the end only in other structures, for example:
Das Essen wird gekocht werden.
The food will be cooked.
Das Essen muss gekocht werden.
The food must be cooked.
B2 tips
At B2, try to vary the tense depending on the time reference:
- Präsens → current processes
- Präteritum → written reports and narratives
- Perfekt → spoken German about completed actions
- Plusquamperfekt → actions completed before another past event
- Futur I → planned future processes
- Futur II → assumptions about completed future actions
Mastering the Vorgangspassiv in all these tenses will make your German sound much more natural and is an important skill for the Goethe B2 and telc B2 exams.
